"Your congregation has great interest!" the comfort dog coordinator mentioned to me. These affirmations encourage us to continue exploring a comfort dog ministry with Lutheran Church Charities (who breeds and trains the dogs), to continue communicating the details with our congregation, and to assess response and interest in developing a comfort dog ministry.

There will be job descriptions of the necessary roles to be filled in February’s newsletter. Your attitude of serving the needs of those affected by the conflict was overwhelming. In March/April a special offering was collected for the Ukrainian relief effort. From that door offering and other mission funds we had available, we were able to donate a total of $16,652.00 dedicated to Ukrainian relief from members and friends of COS. We first sent $536 to Lutheran World Relief in order to have that money count toward their limited matching gift campaign. Another gift was later sent to Lutheran World Relief of $409 and the remaining $15,707 was sent to Mission Central (affiliated with the LCMS and located in Mapleton, IA).

We wanted to share with you updates of how that money is being used to provide relief and assistance to those in need.

> Report from Mission Central

We are so happy that your congregation is so "mission minded" and I want to give you the latest detail. Our dedicated pastors and church staff went into high gear developing an on-line church presence—from worship services, to Bible studies and Sunday school—keeping their flock spiritually nourished. We all had to step up our technological ‘know-how’ a notch to stay spiritually connected to ‘church’.

Breaking through our COVID lethargy came a church announcement of a “Strategic Operations Workshop” coming to Christ Our Savior. “YAWN,” I thought as I planned to sit on the sidelines. But there were more announcements, more chatter, and I started to feel a nudge to participate in it. (“You’re a long time, active member, Linda,” I was thinking to myself, “you should attend, you have an investment in this church”.) So, I offered my interest, rather unenthusiastically, to Pastor Davenport and Arlo Wiltenburg.

The group in discussion

Three long days: lots of listening, talking, thinking, strategizing about Christ Our Savior’s past, present and future. It was led by Rev. Dr. Robert Kasper, Assistant to the President for Congregation ministries/Ministry Support and attended by representatives from Council, Board of Elders, Staff, and members of the congregation. I would like to continue that review with a look into what we accomplished and how we accomplished it.

We began the workshop with three themes, one for each day. The themes were: “Where are we now?” “Where are we going?” and “How do we get there?” but in fact, we never asked ourselves these questions specifically. Instead, Pastor Kasper introduced us to a process which was designed to aid leaders and teams to cut to the core of what is needed to make an organization move forward. In essence, it is a whirlpool. It is a series of exercises that take the diversity of a group’s ideas, comments, and concerns through an inward spiral to an inevitable reduction of thought.

With close to 30 exercises in all, each day was driven to stay on schedule, yet always allowed breaks for deeper discussion. Most notably was the manner in which we began each day. After prayer and before moving forward, Pastor Kasper would ask the group, “Overnight, what became clearer?” It was during these segments that I could really sense the engagement of each individual and the group as a whole.

One of the opening exercises

Although the relevance of every exercise wasn’t always clear, looking back, I can see how each one was impacted by the last and played a role in the next. Lent is starting again.

We are familiar with these things. Year after year, we see the dates marked for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and we might even have traditions for celebrating Fat Tuesday. But this year it will be different. The pandemic has made us question things we previously took for granted and forced us to take a closer look at everything we do.

Specifically, as we at COS look forward to Ash Wednesday, we looked at the practice of the Imposition of Ashes. You know what it’s all about: during the service we line up in the aisle and wait for the pastor to draw the sign of the cross, in ashes, on our foreheads or hands. We listen as he recites the words “ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” (from Genesis 3) over us. We can and should ask ourselves, why do we do this? What does this custom mean? And pertinent to the current situation, how can we do it this year, considering the concerns with COVID-19?

To answer these questions, we must understand what is at the core of this custom. The Imposition of Ashes was started as an opportunity for us to remember our sinfulness and need for repentance. This is nothing new; we know that we are sinful creatures, and we have been taught the importance of repentance. In all parts of our spiritual lives, however, reminders are important. Even the Apostle Paul recognized this (“Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,” 2 Peter 1:12-13).

Dr. Samuel Johnson put it more succinctly: “People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.”

Ash Wednesday is a holy day where we remember two specific things: 1) our human frailty and 2) our need for public repentance before God. These are somber topics. After we acknowledge the truth of our frailty and sinfulness, though, we can equally experience God’s true and real love for us and the amazing victory we celebrate at Easter.

The concept of celebrating important days with memorable rituals on an annual basis came straight from the highest authority: God himself. In the books of the law, God gave detailed instructions to Moses for worship in the tabernacle and festivals, with specific rituals to mark each one. (“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts.’” Leviticus 23:1-2)

We are no longer bound to fulfill these laws: Jesus’ perfect life and final sacrifice taught us this, among other things. (“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8). But the Old Testament rules and regulations do show us a piece of God’s character: he is eager to minister to us in tangible ways.

As we feel the ashes, hear the words of the pastor, and see the crosses on the foreheads and hands of those around us, we are powerfully reminded of what this season of Lent means. We cannot ignore the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on our church practices. Our pastors will be cautious during the Imposition of Ashes. Their hands will be sanitized, and they will be wearing masks. Congregants will approach one by one to receive the mark of the cross.

During this pandemic, there is another reason to celebrate this ritual. So much of our lives have been upset in the past year, and so much that we relied on is gone. While we must accept changes in many areas of our lives, neither God nor his love for us has changed. This one return to normalcy can remind us of those promises. We live in faith, not in fear.

You are welcome to receive the imposition of the ashes as you are comfortable. We certainly respect how you decide to mark this holy day. Whether you come forward to receive the ashes, stay in your seat, or watch at home, you can meditate on the meaning of Ash Wednesday, the upcoming season of Lent, and the significance of Christ’s sacrifice. There is no law here, but there is an opportunity. The opportunity to be overwhelmed by God’s love through the realization of who we really are and how completely Christ has redeemed us. His sacrifice, his love, and his redemption are at the core of this ritual.

It’s obvious, obvious that we don’t have a trace;
It ought to be plain as the nose on our face.
That this Christmas, this year as you already know
Isn’t white because, well, it just didn’t snow!
Now maybe for some that’s all just as well
That we don’t have to shovel up snow for a spell.
But you have to admit that it all looks so right
When we look out the window, and Christmas is white.
[End of “no snow.”]

[Use if there is snow.]
Oh, we still must visit and buy more presents yet,
But we know what’s not missing, a need that’s been met.
For now it is Christmas, and it all looks so right
When we look out the window, and Christmas is white!
[End of “snow.”]

When the dark and the stark and the naked old trees
Glisten and sparkle in the wake of the freeze,
And the muddy old ground, once so barren and low
Becomes such a wonder in its blanket of snow.
And even the stalks of the untrimmed roses
Appear to be snowmen in various poses.
And all that was ugly, unseemly, or trite
Becomes clothed in beauty, all dressed up in white.
But this white picture’s more than Currier and Ives;
This white picture touches more than our eyes.
And God in his wisdom would lead us to know
The message he gives in the white of the snow.
For each stark and dark and naked old tree
Is a description of all that is lacking in me.
And the muddy old ground looking barren and low
Is the stain of my sin and the guilt that I know.
And even the stalks of the untrimmed roses
Stand out as my life in its unholy poses.
And I long for a blanket to cover my sin,
Something to hide the deep stain that’s within.
And I stumble and fumble and search through the night,
But I cannot begin to turn darkness to light.
In my helpless condition, though I strut and I brag,
I’m no closer to white than a filthy old rag.
Oh, I can holler and wail that enough is enough,
And could even try to be hateful and rough.
After all, it’s not my fault. I’m morally lame.
It’s the world! It’s those others! It’s the weather I’ll blame!
But even as I clamor with self-will and with pride,
Looking for excuses behind which to hide,
God’s Law is so perfect, and clear is the sign:
The sin; the transgression, the evil are mine.
And that’s when I sit in the darkness of night,
I pray to God to send forth his light.
“Lord, take all within me that’s rotten and mean,
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean.
Where sin’s ugly stain is all I can show
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
That washing, that cleansing from darkness and strife,
That freedom from bondage, that forgiveness and life,
Was the promise that God through his work would bring,
The promise he gave to each prophet and king:
Salvation would spring forth and put sin to flight,
And Christmas for all men would one day be white.
In so many ways our God spoke of old
And thus through the prophets his message was told.
And through signs and wonders and visions to man
He began to reveal his most wonderful plan.
But did walking with God in the garden in light
Secure man’s salvation and make all things right?
No, Adam and Eve turned away in their pride.
And because of their sin, each one of us died.
And what about Noah, when the flood waters came,
Did life in the ark cleanse the guilt from his name?
No, the sin of the world was not washed in that flood.
Men continued to hate and to shed their warm blood.
Did the rescue from slavery in Egypt by night
Free the world from its bondage to sin and its might?
Did giving the Law on Mount Sinai’s height
Make people sinless and forgiven and right?
Did the Red Sea rescue? Did the wilderness plight?
Was that manna from heaven their holy delight?
Did it happen when God with his own hand
brought them into that Promised Land?
Was it there in the temple, where God chose to dwell?
Did Jerusalem’s walls thwart the powers of hell?
Did the remnant from exile with praises to sing?
Did judges? Did prophets? Did priests? Did kings?
God used all these things only to make it clear,
His promise of ages was still drawing near.
And God in his wisdom, in each sign they could see
Was telling them always, “Hope and trust in me.
And soon when time in its fullness has run,
I will give you that gift of my own precious Son.”
And I see what the prophets had promised for years,
What God’s people longed for with prayers and tears
God brought to pass in the still of the night.
Jesus was born, and Christmas was white!
White because here was God’s holy child.
White because tho’ he was humble and mild,
He would carry our griefs and our sorrows and blame.
He would suffer indignity and insult and shame
And endure each temptation without giving in,
Then give up his life to cleanse us from sin.
White because over sin rank and obscene
He purged me with hyssop, and I became clean.
White because in his shed blood I know,
He washed me in love, I became whiter than snow!
It’s the eve (time) of Christmas and all over the earth,
As Christians we celebrate our dear Savior’s birth.
In spite of the season stuffed full of noise
We remember the reason for all of our joys.
You could cover the world in a blanket of snow,
And still every heart would deep down in it know
That it takes more than snow to turn darkness to light.
Yes, it takes more than snow to make Christmas white.
So where’s the white Christmas that we’re dreaming of?
Why, it’s right in the manger, in God’s gift of love.
No longer is Christmas dark, naked, and old.
No longer will sin leave us barren and cold.
Not the stain of my sin, nor the guilt that you know,
For our Savior has washed us much whiter than snow!
And now through our lives, every day, every hour,
We can know his forgiveness, his strength, and his power.
And then on that day when we see him in light,
We will stand with the multitude clothed in pure white
And give glory forever to God up above
For the gift of a Savior, the power of love.
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With Jesus’ birth here on this night.
May your days always in him be bright
And may all your Christmases be white.

Rev. It's in his nature and is directly related to his love for us and his whole creation. He sustains us and provides for us during good times and bad. He provided Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins and provides us with the Holy Spirit to believe in him and hold tightly to his promises of forgiveness and eternal life (among many others!). His work and love for us will never end. I find great comfort in this simple truth.

Perhaps you have done a lot of different work around your home during this pandemic. You might have worked to establish a home office so that you could work from home, but part of your home might have been converted to a facility to care for a loved one or for your student to learn online. You might have remodeled or spruced up parts of your home with your new spare time, but maybe you worked to help someone else with similar projects.

There's been a lot of work going on around here at Christ Our Savior, too. Our Early Childhood Program has been actively serving our families, and our retiree volunteers have been remodeling and maintaining many rooms in the building. Most of you have not yet experienced the wonderful new acoustic tiling that was installed in the gym a month before the COVID shutdown, and even fewer of you have seen classrooms 1-6 while they are being renovated even now. Brand new AV systems are being installed in the gym and in classrooms 1-4 over the next two weeks to prepare us for in-person Bible study and all of the other activities and events we hope to return to here at COS soon.

With all this, we're also excited to announce our plans for returning to in-person Bible study, Catechism, and Sunday School starting Sunday, September 20. Some things will be similar, but some things are going to be quite different. We've been hard at work on this, too, and look forward to being together again.

Please register for these classes.

Youth & Family Night
As frustrating as this is, we have decided that our Sunday evening Youth & Family Night format is not going to work well given all of our current circumstances and context. We are thankful that it has served as an effective way for youth and families to connect and be nurtured in God's word, but for now, we are cancelling Youth & Family Night. We are currently building an expanded team of leaders for Jr. & Sr. High Youth Group, so stay tuned for more updates regarding those groups.

Sunday School
We are looking forward to this new format! We plan to have preschool Sunday school (ages 3 and 4) in the classroom where it has been (room 15). Lessons will occur much the way they have in the past for these children with learning Bible stories, doing activities that relate to the stories, and interacting with each other.

Grades K-6 will meet in the gym. We will spread out (physically distance) on the floor and have a fun large group introduction including a short lesson and music, making use of new technology currently being installed. This large group time will stream live online as well as be recorded so that those at home can watch in real time or later. After the large group time, we will break up into small groups. There will be tables with a leader and small groups of children. Depending on the day, the lesson, the leaders, etc., those groups may do crafts, games, discussion, etc. There will be lesson content emailed to families so that if your children are not attending in person, you can use the time after the large group introduction to work with your family group at home.

Catechism
Catechism is intended primarily for 7th and 8th grade students at this time as they prepare to be publicly confirmed in the faith they were given in their baptism and be ready to receive The Lord's Supper. Since Youth & Family Night is cancelled for this year, Catechism will be Sunday mornings at 9:45 and will be offered both in person and online simultaneously. Each session will be recorded and posted on our website on a weekly basis. The newly-renovated classrooms 5-6 will be the location for this group.

Sunday Adult Bible Study
Adult Bible Study will begin with a congregation-wide study based on the book, "One Nation Under God", by B. Keith Haney. It will be provided to all participants for free. The newly-renovated classrooms 1-4 will be the location for this study unless capacity limitations lead us to meet in the sanctuary instead. As with Sunday School and Catechism, this will be offered both in person and online simultaneously and will be recorded and posted online on a weekly basis.

Bethel will not meet in person but will continue as they have since March.

Registration
Whether you plan to attend in person or online, please register for all of these classes. This is crucial for us as we plan the logistics of returning to in-person Bible study for all ages. We are excited and thankful that we have the technology resources to offer these both in-person and online, and we hope you will take advantage of these opportunities, whether it's here at COS or in your homes still.

If you have any questions about any of these groups or would like to be a part of leading Sunday School in particular, please contact Pastor Davenport (pastord@christoursavior.org), Pastor Eden (pastore@christoursavior.org), or Karla Schettenhelm (karlas@christoursavior.org).

You can scan the following QR code with your mobile device if you prefer to register using that instead.

Stained Glass Window of Life

By Miriam Rossow, Communications Coordinator

The first stained glass I created was during my Jr. High years, a simple design of a flower that used big pieces of glass. As Jr. High students working with glass for the first time we did not have the skill set to create a very intricate design. (Or at least I did not.)

The second time I had the opportunity to create a stained glass window I was a young adult in my first years of teaching. This time, although I did not have any more experience, I decided I would try something slightly more complicated. Really the design was still very simple: I used only rectangles and squares, and therefore only straight cuts. I made it slightly more complicated by using more colors and making the pieces smaller which meant the glass was more fragile and delicate to handle.

Creating a stained glass window is a slow process. You begin with a design, which involves drawing and coloring what you are hoping to create. Once you have chosen your colors and shapes on paper, you need to choose the correct glass for both color and texture.

When you have chosen the right glass, you need to enlarge your design to a size which allows you to lay a piece of glass over the design and begin the cutting process. Once the glass pieces are all cut, you lay them together and use a soldering iron to secure the joints with lead. (This is, of course, a very quick explanation of a tedious and careful process.)

I recently had the opportunity to color a very intricate stained glass window page of visual art. The page comes from Ponder Anew a Hymn Journal of Trust and Confidence from Next Step Press and Visual Faith Ministries. It reminded me of the two large stained glass windows from the Sanctuary, the Great Commission and the Great Commandment windows. These windows share God's great love for His people by depicting images of events in the life of Jesus.

The window I was coloring in my Ponder Anew book also depicted images of Jesus life. The window was made up of six smaller panes each hosting a picture from Jesus life and symbols of God's continued love for us. Each picture had its own pane of individual pieces that made up the picture. Behind the picture were squares and rectangles creating a window with in the window, and behind that were triangles and parallelograms making up the bigger window pane. Around all of those panes and images was a border of smaller rectangles. As I said it was intricate and certainly not something I would try making into an actual stained glass window.

As I colored I thought about all of the decisions that we make in our lives each day. Each of those decisions connects with another decision-- a decision by us, our family, or another person that we may or may not know. I suppose that is why decisions feel so big and daunting: we realize how our decisions can affect the lives of other people, but we can't always see how they connect.

When I make a decision in my life, I don't always know how that will affect other people. We make decisions with the best information that we have; and sometimes the information we have feels like it is just the color of the piece of glass next to us. We can't always see how the decision we make fits into the design as a whole.

I am thankful that God is the artist of my picture. I don't have to know how each decision affects the next one. I can be confident that as I make decisions based on the best information in front of me, even if the information is limited to what I can see right next to me, that the Spirit of Jesus will take those decisions and make them work to God's glory and to the good of the people around me. Jesus will use my decisions to make His beautiful picture.

I am not the artist, God is the artist. God sees the whole picture; and God sees how each decision, color or shape, connects to and affects those around it. God is capable and willing to move shapes or choose a different color to get the end result that is the most beautiful picture for each of us. And my decisions matter to the overall design. The color scheme makes a difference and there are colors that go better next to each other. Even as the colors matter, the Artist is in control and can move and make changes as He sees necessary.

So I live in the grace of knowing that as I make decisions, I can do so with the knowledge that Jesus is working in and through those decisions for me and those around me to create a beautiful picture. God does not just leave my decisions up to me at random. The Holy Spirit shows me the parts of the picture that help me make the decision. I am not required to make the exact right decision. I am asked to look at the colors and the part of the picture that I can see and make the decision that seems to fit best. And when I have 'messed up' or made a 'wrong' decision, Jesus can, and will use even that 'mistake' for His glory in His picture!

I was recently offered a position to teach 5th-8th grade Language Arts and 5th grade homeroom at St. Paul Lutheran School in Ann Arbor. This is the school that my children have attended since we moved to Michigan 7 years ago. We have roots at that school. As Justin and I prayed and tried to make a decision about this job offer I saw just enough of the picture to see that this was the next right decision for us. I have accepted this offer to teach at St. Paul and will be stepping down as Communications Coordinator and Children's Music director at Christ Our Savior.

I thank Christ Our Savior for the opportunity to share Jesus with each of you, adults and children. I thank you for being willing to let me help you share Jesus with the community and each other through your stories of faith, hope, and love in Jesus. I pray you will continue to share your stories with those around you. Your story helps other people see a part of the God's picture of love for all.

I am excited to take this next step. And I am so thankful that I don't have to be in charge of the overall design! Each decision is difficult enough on its own. I'll do my best to make a decision that makes sense from what I can see of the design.

How will this decision will compliment the colors around it? Who will be the next piece in your stained glass at Christ Our Savior? I look forward to seeing how God will work and move through these decisions!

We might be afraid of rejection. We might be afraid of saying the wrong the thing. We might not feel like we have the ability to speak eloquently or even if we can speak well, we might feel like we just don't have anything to offer.

The beautiful thing is as the body of Christ, as followers of Jesus we each have been given the Holy Spirit. Jesus through the Holy Spirit has called us to Himself. He has called us to follow Him. He has given us insights and belief. Jesus and the Holy Spirit work a beautiful miracle in our lives every day. This is worth sharing.

At Christ Our Savior, we believe that Jesus speaks in and through His Word to everyone. We believe that when you read the Bible, listen to a hymn or praise song, walk in creation, Jesus can and will speak to you. We believe the Word of the Lord doesn't just come to His people on Sunday for an hour or two. We believe that it daily and richly provides you with all you need. This is worth sharing.

And because we believe this, we also believe that everyone has something to share. We can lift each other up in our faith. We can encourage and support each other. We can point each other to the promises that Jesus is giving us each and every day. This is worth sharing.

When you believe and imagine that everyone has something to share from Jesus it can become a joy to share. You don't have to share the whole salvation story or the whole story of the Bible as you share your faith. Instead you get to share the one little lesson, promise, encouragement that Jesus is giving you right then and there. And that lesson, promise, or encouragement can lift someone else up to share their lesson, promise, encouragement. And as it continues, we now have Jesus being shared daily from the body of Christ in unique ways from and to each person.

How to Share?

The how to share can be a stumbling block for many. As each person is unique and each faith is unique the way we each share our faith is also unique. Some people may be comfortable sharing their faith through a song that is meaningful to them. Some people may want to write what they are hearing from God. For some people talking to and with others is a way they are comfortable sharing their faith. Each of these ways to share faith and words from Jesus can be beneficial and can be done both in private with friends and in a more public way through our website, Facebook, or Bible studies.

During the Covid-19 pandemic and stay home, stay safe order Christ Our Savior instituted our Family of Faith Devotionals. During the time when everyone was at home it was easy to feel isolated and the ways we had shared our faith were not happening or not as easily accessible anyway. Our in-person Bible classes were suspended, and we were not fellowshipping at worship together. It became evident that the need to 'see' people and 'hear' people share what Jesus was doing in them was very needed.

Now that the stay home, stay safe order is lifted we want to continue this practice of hearing and sharing our faith in new and different ways from the body of Christ. Many people continue to stay at home and our in-person fellowship time continues to be limited. Our Pastors and staff believe it is beneficial to have the Body of Christ sharing truths with the Body of Christ.

So, what is Jesus teaching you? What is He encouraging you to share? What lesson, promise, or encouragement are you holding onto right now? Share that with us and as you do you will be building up the body of Christ.

What to Share?

What you share and how you share it is unique to each person and even unique to the time in their life. Sometimes we can't form our own thoughts and words and using someone else's is the best way to share what Jesus is doing in us. Sometimes our emotions or lessons are best shared through an image.

Lessons in life do not and are most often not huge and earth shattering. Often we are being shaped and molded slowly and in small ways. These are beneficial for the body of Christ also. There is no need to feel like you have to share a new theological truth to share Jesus. The small, everyday truths that Jesus is teaching you and reminding you of are helpful for everyone. To know that I am not alone in feelings of anguish, frustration, confusion, joy, peace is a gift to the body of Christ. To be pointed back to the promise or truth that Jesus has for us is a gift to the body of Christ. Be willing to start small and as you continue to share your faith experiences you will find Jesus growing and shaping you into something different.

Read a devotional from your daily devotional life.

Read a small section of scripture.

Respond to worship- the sermon, a song, a prayer...

Share a song.

Share some bible journaling.

Questions to Ask

When you decide what kind of word you are sharing then you can ask yourself "what about it wants to be shared"?
Crisis Management 2020

Wikipedia defines crisis management as the process by which an organization (in our case a church) deals with a disruptive and unexpected event that threatens to harm the organization or its stakeholders (members).

Let’s see…has there been anything in the last, say in the last 4 months, that individually and collectively we have dealt with that was unexpected and disruptive?? Um….can you say Covid19? The above Wikipedia definition pretty much describes my life lately, as I’m sure it does yours. Disruptive, unexpected and maybe even threatening at times.

Um….can you say Covid19? The above Wikipedia definition pretty much describes my life lately, as I’m sure it does yours. Disruptive, unexpected and maybe even threatening at times.

As a result of the pandemic there is a lot of crisis management happening wherever you are. Hospitals. Governmental agencies. Businesses. Congregations. Families. Over the last several months all of us have made countless decisions, countless adjustments, countless changes. Where will we go? Where will we not go? What will we do? What will we not do? Cover? Gather? Isolate? Test?

As I make decisions, I’m reminded that those things that are important to me are helping me in the decision-making process. What are those principals that shape and mold who I am and what I say and do? Decisions need to be made not just for the sake of ‘making a decision’ but for the good of my family, for the good of people that I serve and the furthering of the kingdom of Jesus.

These are challenging times, to say the least! In any situation, Covid19 times included, there are always new opportunities for me and all of us to shine the love of Jesus. Please do! He hasn’t failed you, forsaken you or forgotten what’s going on in your life. He is faithful! Remember His faithfulness when your tempted forget His promises.

Here are some foundational principals that I’m not going to compromise on when living in these times or when making decisions in this crisis management mode. They are helpful for me to look at time and time again. I pray that they are to you as well.

I will trust in God’s love and power above that of the government or money.

I will be directed by truth not emotions.

I will work to sort out facts from fiction.

I will not follow the crowd or jump on a bandwagon– even if I like the music.

I will love my neighbor.

I will be prayerful.

I will be joyful.

Please know that these “I will’s” are empowered by the Holy Spirit living in me. Together, let’s not compromise on who we are in Jesus. Others are watching what we do as we navigate this crisis. I pray that they’ll see Jesus in me and they'll see Jesus in you!

God loves you and so do I!
Pastor Davenport

Learn More on re-opening page

Find resources for discipleship while at home

Tyler Cronkright, Associate Pastor at Family of God

Coronavirus and social unrest have had Pastor Hill and I thinking about how we can better serve our community and better serve our volunteers. The pandemic and shutdown have given us a lot of time to explore other avenues of doing ministry. Obviously, there is the street ministry that many of you are up to date on and the continuing food ministry. We also took some time during the pandemic to explore technological ministry, as so many other churches have, and began putting services, discussions, devotions, and sermons on our Facebook page.

One of the things that I, personally, have been doing is exploring different podcasts while being out and about on my bike. I am finding that it is an awesome way to start the day, pass the time driving in the car, and even finish the evening before bed. Anyway, I had been sharing different podcasts that I have come across with Pastor Hill and he suggested, “What if you and I began one?” This began our discussion of what our theme might be, what our purpose might be, what our logo could be, and the list goes on and on. It was some very spirited discussion.

After purchasing equipment, finding some software, and getting it all set up with a provider, we launched the first episode of Jesus, Dietrich, and Me on June 19, 2020. Each week, we look at different quotes from the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and weave them together with Jesus and current cultural affairs. Our goal is simple. We want to enlighten our listeners about one of our favorite guys, Pastor Bonhoeffer while talking about some very tough, but serious topics. We have three episodes produced already, and I have to say that each are getting better. The discussions have been great, and the quality has been improving. We will be hoping to even have guests on the show in the future!

How big will our audience be? That remains to be discovered. But, as Abraham pleaded with God for Sodom, for the sake of 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, or even 10, we will produce the episodes. We would encourage you all to take a listen! You can find them on our Facebook page and on various platforms such as Spotify, Google Podcasts, RadioPublic, and Anchor. Please give us your feedback (email is good) as you listen!
